Where do I start?
We recommend that you try answering some of the questions on the online exam. You can take the online exam and then determine if you would like to follow through with registration. Once you have registered, you are a carded umpire. As a carded umpire you receive an Official Red Umpire Hat, Official Rule Book, your umpire certificate, secondary accident and liability insurance coverage and you will be able to access the online manuals and casebook.
I’m interested but concerned I might not cut it!
Don’t worry, as a new umpire you will be directed to an area umpire group or Umpire In Chief (UIC). The UIC works with all umpires (new and experienced) to train and mentor. Often, you will be paired with a more experienced umpire to get you acquainted with the role. Online instruction includes manuals which feature signals, positioning, rule interpretations, and game management. All carded umpires are provided access to a casebook which will assist you with learning the umpire role. In-person clinics or group learning sessions are often coordinated by the various groups. Attendance at these sessions assist you with questions and concerns you may have. You will meet fellow umpires who will also provide you with tips and tools to assist you in your role.
How do I get game assignments?
You will need to work with your local UIC or group to communicate your availability for game assignments. Game assignments are available for league play (typically weeknights) and tournament assignments are usually on weekends. Assignment schedules, remuneration and other details will be outlined to you by the local Umpire Coordinator and vary depending on the requirements of the specific assignment. Provincial and National Championship attendance varies by region, your local UIC can provide you with more details on these events.
